Elevators used to travel within starships or starbases. Because of the huge size of the starship, turbolifts travel both horizontally and vertically. Turbolifts are verbally controlled, for example: "Deck Four, Transporter Room Two."
Ofcourse there are situations where the turbolift won’t respond to verbally commands. In these situations there is always a keypad to enter your destination. When the turbolift completely fails, there the last option are the jefferies tubes.
